  • 2010 NCAA Ski Championships - Day 2 Results

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. --- With three top-12 finishes in the men's classical race this morning, the University of New Mexico moved into third place at the halfway mark of the 2010 NCAA National Ski Championships with 319 points. UNM is 101 points behind the leader, Denver (420 points), and 32 points behind host Colorado (351). The men finished second as team in the 10-kilometer race with 102 points and All-America finishes by Martin Kaas and Pierre Niess. Senior Polina Ermoshina stumbled during the women's 5-kilometer race, but recovered to finish sixth overall and earn her fourth classic All-America honor.

Ermoshina is one All-America performance away from becoming one of the most decorated Lobos in UNM skiing history. The native of Moscow, Russia, now has six career All-America awards (4 classic, 2 freestyle) in seven tries with one more chance on Saturday to pick up her seventh. Ermoshina is currently third on the UNM all-time All-America list behind Lobo greats Linn Klaesson made her first NCAA appearance, finishing 33rd overall.

With the Lobos in sixth-place in the overall team standings after the women's, the Lobo men need to finish strong and close together. Tor-Hakon Hellebostad, a senior from Nesoddtangen, Norway, was the first Lobo across the finish in the interval start format and held on for a 12th-place finish. Niess, a freshman from Strasbourg, France, was the next Lobo across and earned his first UNM All-America honor in seventh place. Kaas, a junior from Oslo, Norway, made it 3-for-3 All-America in NCAA race appearances during his UNM career with a fifth-place finish.

Competition continues Friday night with the Alpine teams hitting the slopes under the lights at Howelson Hill for the national championship slalom races. The men's first run begins at 5:15 p.m., followed by the women at 6:30 p.m. Second runs begin at 8:15 and 9:15 p.m. Live results links, and photo gallery and blog updates are available on GoLobos.com.
