PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Seems the golf club known worldwide for its breathtaking oceanside location has a pair of Lobos hunting its grounds.
The prestigious PGA Tour event, held every Feb. at perhaps the most famous public golf course in the United States, boasts a purse of $6.2 million. Pebble Beach, home to some of golf's most treasured memories, will host the 2010 U.S. Open later this summer.
Now on to the two Lobos seen lurking around the grounds this week. Letzig completed his New Mexico career in 2003, while Levin finished his at the conclusion of the 2005 season. The duo is tied for both the most tournament wins in a single season (3) and career wins (4) in Lobo men's golf history.
Levin has shot an 8-under-par 68-69-69=206 through three rounds and is tied with tour notables Vijay Singh, Jeff Maggert, Sergio Garcia, Jim Elkington, Jim Furyk and seven others for 20th place. He's one stroke out of 15th place and three out of the top 10 entering Sunday's final round.
Levin notched birdies on holes 2, 11, 12 and 14 Saturday with only one bogy (hole 9). He's averaging 253.6 yards per drive and hitting the fairways at a 57.14-percent clip. Levin has also hit 77.78 percent of the greens in regulation.
Letzig trails Levine by a single stroke, having carded a 7-under 67-74-66=207 though his three rounds. He's in a seven-way tied for 33rd place, having shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to climb back into contention. Saturday's round included an eagle on the par-5, 502-yard second hole and six birdies to go with a pair of bogeys on holes 14 and 17.
Letzig is averaging 309.9 yards per drive and hitting the Pebble Beach fairways at an 85.71 percent clip. He's also hitting 61.11 percent of the greens in regulation.
Dustin Johnson and Paul Goydos are tied for the lead heading into the final round, each having carded an 18-under 196 though three.
