SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The New Mexico softball team fell in its season opener at the Commercial Capital Early Bird Tourament to UC Santa Barbara, 5-0.
Two errors to start the third inning allowed the Gauchos to get four runs on the board. Lindsey Herrin walked with one out to score Nicole Churnock, who reached on an error, to score. Jennifer Davis singled to right field bringing in Kendra Singley and Brittany Putich. Karyna Wilkerson then flied out to center, allowing Lindsey Herrin to score.
UC Santa Barbara's final run came in the fifth from Davis, who singled to center allowing Singley to score.
New Mexico and the Gauchos each produced three hits but it was the Lobos' four unearned runs that gave UCSB the edge it needed.
Senior Ashley Perkins allowed just three hits while striking out eight in her complete game performance. Junior Kristina Schmallen, sophomore Ryanne Hodgins and freshman Christina Rios all went 1-3 for the Lobos at the plate.
Davis led Santa Barbara from the mound and at the plate. She went 2-3 with three RBI and allowed just three hits and struck out 11 over seven innings.
New Mexico will take on 16th-ranked Oregon State tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT followed by a rematch with the Gauchos at 2 p.m.
