New Mexico Player Quotes

Linebacker Carmen Messina

On getting team ready
"Well, I talked to the team and let the seniors know that this is the last time they will step onto this field at our home stadium. We have gone 3-0 on senior day and I think we should wear pink more often because that seems to be our color to win the games."

On the forced fumble that set up the winning touchdown
"It was great. Gave us a momentum change and I knew then we weren't going into overtime."

On the turnover
"It's something we have been working on back in August. It was something we were lacking and I got on the guys during halftime that we are due for a turnover and it happened to be on that last drive."

On the turnover play
"It was supposed to be a QB read and the QB just kept it and followed his running back, and he got a little push and I ripped it out too fast because I was trying to recover it myself, but I think J-Mart got a hold of it. He had a great game today making back to back plays and he kept the momentum up on our side."

On first win
"It feels great knowing we are not going win-less the whole season. We should have won our first game changing our whole season around, but it feels great to celebrate with our fans. My whole family and my whole town pretty much so it felt great to celebrate with them."

On tackles
"It feels great to tie the record for most tackles. If I even got one tackle today, I would be happy knowing we won our game. I'll worry about all the records and accolades at the end of the season."

Quarterback B.R. Holbrook

On getting flipped upside-down on a goal line play
"It probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but you do what you got to do to make a play and get in the end zone."

On Carmen Messina
"Carmen is the heart and soul of this team and when he has something to say, everyone stops and listens. Next year is going to be rough without him, but today he played lights out and I couldn't be more proud of him tonight."

On winning the game
"Words can't describe it. You work so hard every week, and it's like getting a monkey "off your back and right now it feels awesome.

On the seniors' feelings for win
"I don't really want to speak for them, but I'm sure it's a euphoric feeling and it has to mean the world."

On the first drive
"It was awesome. To be honest, I was looking for a flag and when I didn't see one I knew it was going to be a good day."

UNLV Coach and Player Quotes

UNLV Head Coach Bobby Hauck

Opening Statement
"Obviously, we're really disappointed. We probably did enough good things here to come in to beat New Mexico. But we made far too many mistakes that cost us the game."

On UNLV's inability to pass with two unhealthy quarterbacks
"If you asked any coach in America that same question, it's difficult when you're really having a hard time, for sure. We tried to warm him up, but he just wasn't able to go; the same with Riley. He's got some nagging issues too that he's battling, so we had to go with our third guy. We did give him a lot of work this because we were prepared that could potentially happen."

On UNLV's defensive gameplay
"We didn't play well enough in the first half on defense. We gave up an 80-yard touchdown on the first play. We kind of half expected it to be coming too. It wasn't very good by us. After that we settled in to a degree, but we didn't play well enough in any phase to win."

On how UNLV regroups
"That's what you do. That's what you do. You regroup and you go forward."

UNLV Defensive End B.J. Bell

On how frustrating the loss was
"Yes, it's very frustrating. But, they came out and they came to play and they did their thing. So you got to give it up to them"

On the UNLV's progress throughout the game
"We might have taken steps forward and some steps back. But we're always on what we need to do. The coaches harp on us every day to get on what we have to do."

On UNLV's fourth-quarter fumble
"It was kind of frustrating. But that's how the games played. We just have to learn from that and work on it and go onto next week."

UNLV Middle Linebacker Nate Carter

On how frustrating the loss was
"I don't know. A loss is a loss. It's tough. We just try to come back for the next week."

On UNLV's slow start
"It wasn't our best performance. We just didn't really execute that well. As a whole, we just didn't play the way we should play."

On whether UNLV
"I don't know if you can look at it that way. I guess it's your point of view. We're still a young team. It's just part of the growing process and maturing as a team to play consistently."

On how UNLV regroups
"Just go back to work on Monday and keep practicing."
