ITA Qualifying Play Begins Monday

TULSA, Okla. - The University of New Mexico men's tennis team will begin the qualifying rounds at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa, on Monday.

Senior Miles Bugby fell short of making the qualifying round with a loss today to SMU's Artem Borodach, 3-6, 7-6 [5], 6-4.

Bugby won two consecutive pre-qualifying singles matches on Saturday. After a first round bye, he defeated Iowa's Reinoud Haal 6-4, 6-2, in round two. Bugby followed up with a win over conference rival Adrian Simon of TCU, 4-6, 7-6 [4], 6-2.

Lobo seniors Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki were pre-selected for the qualifying round. Parkes will take on Nebraska's Davis Bendheim, while Kassautzki will meet up with Borodach.

The final 16 players of the singles qualifying draw advance to play in the concluding 64-man draw starting on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Qualifying action for doubles begins on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Representing New Mexico will be the duo of Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby who will face Sasha Heinemann and Andreas Weber of Hawaii. Joe Wood and Graeme Kassautzki will match up against Tulsa's Marko Ballok and Alberto Sottocorno.

Teams must advance three rounds in doubles qualifying to enter the main draw.
