Fall Action: Seniors Miles Bugby, Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki travelled to Irvine, Calif., this past weekend for the USTA Futures, a testing ground for student-athletes that have a future at the professional level. Parkes notched four consecutive wins, entering the main draw today, but was defeated 7-6, 7-6, by Nikolas Basilashbili, eliminating him from further play. Bugby and Kassautzki were eliminated on Saturday after they each notched a win on Friday.
Six Lobos took part in the Arizona Invitational this past weekend. Newcomer Carl Ho advanced to the semifinals, but fell to Arizona's Jason Zafiros, 6-4, 6-3. Zafiros had defeated senior Chandler Brass in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Sophomore Joe Wood was also eliminated in the quarterfinals. Along with three other Lobos, the group used the Invite's consolation rounds to rack up some practice time.
Up Next: The Lobos will travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Invite beginning on Friday, Oct. 3. The Lobos will then host the Balloon Fiesta Invite from Oct. 10-12. The following week, Oct. 15-19, UNM will make its first of two trips to Las Vegas, Nev. for the ITA Fall Regional. The Lobos will make their way back to Las Vegas Oct. 30-Nov. 2 for the UNLV Fall Invitational.
How they finished: The Lobos concluded the 2007-08 season with a 20-8 record, the best in 13 years. UNM ended Mountain West Conference play with a 5-1 mark and a share of the regular season title. The Lobos finished ranked No. 41 in the nation.
Head Coach: Alan Dils is embarking on his 13th season as the head coach. Last season he became the winningest UNM's men's tennis coach, finishing with a 164-112 record. Dils was also named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year for the third time.
