COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico's junior starting pitcher Rudy Jaramillo has been the Mountain West Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his shutout performance against Air Force May 6. This is the second time Jaramillo has received this recognition in his career.
The junior left-hander threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout in the Lobos' 5-0 win over Air Force May 6.
The Chandler, Ariz., native tied a season-high with nine strikeouts in the contest, issuing only two walks. Even more impressive was the fact Jaramillo did not allow a Falcon runner to advance past second base.
It was the second complete game Jaramillo has thrown this season, and it was his first shutout. Jaramillo currently leads UNM in wins on the season with four.
Never one to toot his own horn, Jaramillo was very humble after the performance, giving most of the credit to his defense for his shutout.
"We just threw fastballs and changeups the whole game," Jaramillo said. "I only threw one curveball. I just let my defense do their work."
"It was a great shutout by Rudy Jaramillo," head coach Ray Birmingham said. "That's probably one of the better offensive teams Air Force has had since I've been here and Rudy found a way to cure it."
