FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of New Mexico got a glimpse of its future in a surprise, early season indoor track and field meet at Northern Arizona last night. A group of 15 Lobo sprinters and jumpers - mostly freshmen - made the trip west on I-40 for a small dual meet with the host Lumberjacks and came away with several strong performances at the J.L. Walkup Skydome.

Freshman Precious Selmon led the UNM women, just missing a 10-year-old school record in the 60-meter hurdles with an altitude adjusted time of 8.51 (8.47 raw) in her collegiate debut. Angela Whyte - who went on to become an Olympian for her native Canada - set the school record of 8.49 in 2000.

Selmon - a talented multi-event prospect from Crystal City, Mo. - also recorded the fastest time of the night in the 60-meter dash with an altitude adjusted 7.73 and tied for third in the long jump with a leap of 18' 4 1/2" (5.60m).

The Lobo men unveiled a new sprint prospect as well as freshman Kendall Spencer won the 60 with an adjusted time of 6.91 - just 0.03 seconds off Aaron Brack's 2006 record of 6.88. Spencer (San Mateo, Calif.) also won the 200 with a time of 22.03.

Freshman transfer De'Vron Walker also made an immediate impact in his New Mexico debut, winning the 60 hurdles with an adjusted time of 8.38. Walker (Los Angeles, Calif.) clocked the fastest time by a Lobo in the event in three years.

UNM also received strong performances from indoor sophomore Asal Salehpoor, who recorded an indoor best of 18' 4 1/2" (5.60m) in the long jump (T-3rd), and freshman Shirley Pitts (Las Vegas, Nev.), who won the 200 with a time of 25.44.

New Mexico kicks off the bulk of its 2009-10 indoor season on Jan. 16 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Convention Center will be the site of a full slate of collegiate, high school, and professional indoor meets this winter, including the Mountain West Conference Championships, NCAA Division II Championships, and USA Championships.
