Lobo Baseball Signs 13 To National Letters Of Intent During Fall Signing Period

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico head baseball coach Rich Alday and the Lobo baseball program signed 13 players during the fall signing period. The players will be eligible for the 2005 season. Below is a profile on each of the players:

Kyle Blanks - 1B - 6-6 - 270 - Edgewood, N.M. (Moriarty High School)

Blanks is an imposing hitter at the plate, slugging five homers while batting .551 his junior season...bats right and throws right...earned first-team all-district honors last spring...led Moriarty High School to a second place finish in the state tournament.

Tyler Cales - P - 6-4 - 190 - San Antonio, Texas (Madison High School)

Cales went 8-2 with a 1.43 ERA his junior season at Madison High School...struck out 89 batters and only allowed 47 hits and 21 walks in 62 innings of work.

Carlos Castillo - C - 6-3 - 195 - Los Lunas, N.M. (El Paso Community College)

Castillo is an excellent defensive catcher...a good receiver, blocks well and has a strong arm...consistent hitter at the plate...hit .280 with five homers and 23 RBI.

Brian Flores - LHP - 5-10 - 160 - Carlsbad, N.M. (Carlsbad High School)

Flores is a solid left-handed pitcher that collected a 12-3 record his junior season and garnered all-district honors...has an impressive 23-3 overall record during his high school career, including a perfect 8-0 mark his sophomore year...threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts for Carlsbad High in a state tournament regional game last spring.

Mitchell Goines - RHP - 6-3 - 230 - Farmington, N.M. (New Mexico Junior College)

Goines is a power pitcher who throws in the high 80's...throws an effective slider, sinker and changeup...posted a 10-1 mark with a 4.32 ERA last year for Coach Ray Birmingham of New Mexico Junior College...struck out 74 batters in 66.2 innings of work...follows a line of Lobos who have pitched at NMJC...Coach Birmingham, who led the Thunderbirds to a 43-14 record and an appearance in the regionals, calls Goines "one of the best pitchers I've ever coached" and a "great competitor and great athlete"...also played shortstop, third base and outfield...hit .327 at the plate with three homers, 22 RBI, eight doubles and three triples.

Josh Hernandez - INF - 5-9 - 190 - Los Lunas, N.M. (El Paso Community College)

Hernandez is a solid defensive infielder with good range and a strong arm...a very good offensive player as well...hit in the four-hole for El Paso CC last spring and hit .417 with seven home runs and 65 RBI...has also pitched and can throw in the low-90's.

Brandon Hewett - RHP - 5-11 -195 - Terrell, Texas (Forney High School)

Hewett is a power pitcher who consistently throws 89-90 mph...tops out at 92 mph...collected a 10-2 record and had a 0.85 ERA last year for Forney High School and led his team to the regionals...struck out 100 batters in 72 innings of work...also played third base...hit .425 with two homers and 23 RBI while batting in the five-hole for Forney High.

Bobby Moore - LHP - 6-0 - 180 - Edgewood, N.M. (Moriarty High School)

Moore is a left-handed pitcher who consistently throws in the mid-80's with capability of reaching the high 80's...produced a 4-1 record with a 1.26 ERA his junior season at Moriarty High School...fanned 55 batters in 33 innings of work...struck out 16 batters in the state semifinals, leading his team to the state championship game while setting a new playoff high for strikeouts in a New Mexico state tournament game...earned first-team all-district honors...batted .492 with one homer at the plate.

Jordan Pacheo - INF/P - Albuquerque, N.M. (La Cueva High School)

Pacheco played for La Cueva High School, the defending New Mexico 5A State Champions...batted .545 with six home runs and 31 RBI's as a junior for the 29-0 Bears in 2003...on the mound, Pacheco went 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA and 32 strikeouts.

Raymond Pelton - RHP - 6-5 - 240 - Carlsbad, N.M. (El Paso Community College)

Pelton is a big, strong pitcher on the mound who was 5-0 with a pair of saves out of the bullpen last year for El Paso Community College...did not lose a game the last two years in high school...El Paso head coach Ken Jacome calls Pelton the most competitive pitcher he has ever been around.

Joe Register - INF - 6-2 - 210 - Lufkin, Texas (Lufkin High School)

Register is a corner infielder who can also catch...can swing for power and average...first-team all-district pick as a DH last season at Lufkin High School...named MVP of the Mickey Mantle World Series with the champion Dallas Knights in the summer of 2002...picked New Mexico after considering Northern Iowa and TCU.

Eric Ridener - RHP - 6-4 - 215 - Coral Springs, Fla. (Coral Springs High School)

Ridener is a big, strong pitcher with an upper-80's fastball and developing breaking pitch...came on at the end of his junior year at Plano East High School in Texas and had a solid summer with the Dallas Mustangs before moving back to Florida with his family...TexasBaseballNews.com comments, "Ridener is one of the more projectile righthanders in the 2004 class, and as he continues to develop, he has a chance of to be a dominating Division I pitcher." ?

Nick Sanders - INF - 5-11 - 165 - Albuquerque, N.M. (Valley High School)

Sanders put up impressive numbers for Valley High School last spring, blasting 11 homers and driving in over 40 runs while batting over .500...named to the all-district team...led Valley to a third-place finish in the state tournament.
