EL PASO, Texas - The New Mexico softball team (13-7) swept the doubleheader against UTEP with its 10-1 win in game two at Tejanas Field Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Iraina Ogas got the Lobos on the board with her lead-off home run to center field in the second inning.
Sophomore Stephanie Kennedy scored the first run of the third inning as freshman Robyn Hutson reached on an error by shortstop Kristin Hardy. Junior Ashley Shartzer followed with her RBI single that scored junior Cassie Chavez. With two outs, senior Ora Hensley doubled down the left field line to score Hutson and Ogas. Shartzer almost scored as well but was tagged out at the plate.
With a 5-0 lead, the Lobos broke the game wide open in the sixth. Chavez had a sacrifice fly to center that scored freshman Amy Ray who reached after being hit by a pitch. Hutson then hit a three-run home run that scored senior Jen Sena and Kennedy. Hensley scored the final run on sophomore Jamar Bynum's bunt single.
The Lobos were one out away from their fourth consecutive shutout when Hardy singled up the middle to score Juwauna Davis.
Senior Amy Dumas earned the win, hurling six innings. Dumas gave up three hits and one walk while striking out two. Malia Simmons took the loss for the Miners, throwing six innings, giving up eight hits, five earned runs, six walks and struck out one.
Ogas led the Lobos, going 2-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and one walk. Hutson was 1-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs while Hensley was 2-4 with one run and two RBIs. For UTEP, Hardy was 1-3 with an RBI, Megan Whiteaker was 1-2 and Davis was 1-2 with one run scored.
New Mexico goes back into tournament play, entering the Red Raider Classic hosted by Texas Tech. The Lobos will play Columbia at 4 p.m. and Texas Tech at 8 p.m. CST on Friday.
