TEMPE, Ariz. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team battled Northern Arizona in a tough four-game match to remain undefeated, 30-24, 30-17, 28-30, 30-26. New Mexico improves to 7-0 on the season, the best start for the program since 1990.

"It was great to pull out the win and remain undefeated," said New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson. "This match gave us an opportunity to get all of our healthy players some time on the court."

It looked like the Lobos were going to have a relatively easy match as they built a 12-4 lead in Game One and kept NAU just out of reach, never letting them get any closer than a four-point differential.

Game Two saw Northern Arizona take a 6-2 lead before the Lobos got on track, swinging the momentum to UNM's favor, 15-10. It was a team effort as kills by Jeanne Fairchild and Anna Lehne, and strong serving by Lisa Meeter pushed to the score to the positive.

Lehne, Melissa Middleton, Joelle Ingram and Jade Michaelsen each recorded key kills to push the UNM lead to double-digits for the final 30-17.

In Game Three, New Mexico took the initial lead, 1-0. But Northern Arizona took control building to a five-point lead, 24-19. Kills by Fairchild and Taylor Hadfield, and a block by Ingram got the Lobos to within one. But NAU held on for the Game Three win.

Game Four was a battle from the start as neither team was able to build more than a two-point lead with 18 ties. The last tie came at 26 on a kill by the Lumberjacks.

Fairchild put down a kill to put UNM ahead, 27-26. Two NAU attack errors brought the Lobo lead to 29-26. Meeter killed the ball for the final point and the match win.

Fairchild led the Lobos with 19 kills and three blocks. Meeter recorded her second double-double in two matches with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Jade Michaelsen played errorless offense with 18 kills and no errors from the attack.

New Mexico kicks off the 2007-08 Rio Grande Rivalry presented by Route 66 Casino Hotel at New Mexico State on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. The volleyball team will be the first Lobo team to fight the Aggies for points in the all-sports competition.
