AUSTIN, Texas - After a solid opening to the 2012 outdoor campaign, the University of New Mexico track and field team is traveling to Austin, Texas, for the 85th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 28-31.

The meet, to be held at Mike A. Myers Track Stadium, will feature some of the nation's premier talent. 14 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 teams will compete on the men's side, including eight of the top ten institutions. For the women, 16 USTFCCCA Top 25 teams will participate, also including eight of the top ten universities.

However, that does not mean the Lobos will be dazzled by the preeminent competition. New Mexico is coming off of its own strong start to the outdoor season after competing at the UTEP Springtime Invitational over the weekend in El Paso, Texas.

New Mexico as a team was able to register 29 top-ten finishes and 13 top-five marks down at UTEP. Highlights of the meet included sophomore hurdler Chaz Lewis' title in the men's 400-meter hurdle with a raw time of 52.50-seconds, and junior high jumper Marin Schweigert's victory in the women's high jump with an outdoor-personal best of 5-feet, 6-inches.

Out in Austin, the Lobos are looking to take small numbers, as this time they are taking only eight individual athletes and one relay team.

For the men, Beejay Lee is scheduled to participate in the 100m, with De'Vron Walker and Richard York in the 110m hurdles, and Chaz Lewis and York in the 400m hurdles. The team of Gizeh Ibañez, Derek Montoya, Derek Halladay and Lewis will also run in the 4x400 relay.

On the women's side, Precious Selmon is competing in both the 100m and 100m hurdles, Natalie Gray and Ruth Senior are going in the 1500m and Margo Tucker in the pole vault.

Currently, the Lobo men are ranked 42nd in the Preseason National Team Computer Rankings that were released by the USTFCCCA on March 22. Similarly, the Lobo women are ranked 41st.

The meet kicks off on Wednesday with the heptathlon at 11:30 a.m. CT and is followed up Thursday at 11 a.m. with the conclusion of the decathlon. The first track and field events will also start Thursday, with the women's hammer throw at 12:30 p.m. and the men's 400m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. Action on Friday opens up with the women's 4x100 relay and javelin at 9:30 a.m. and the final day, Saturday, starts at 10 a.m. with the women's discus.
