ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer senior Alanna Abeyta and junior Katelyn Ley have been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive and Co-Offensive Players of the Week as announced Monday by the league office. The announcement marks the first-time in school history that the Lobos have received both awards in the same week. Abeyta and Ley are two-year starters for UNM and both receive the honor for the first time.

"It's a great honor for this team and for Katelyn and Alanna," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "It shows that our team is most important but yet we still have individual accomplishments. They both played really well over the weekend and we are excited to receive the honors."

Ley, a Marine, Minn., native, scored two goals and collected an assist to highlight the Lobos 4-0 victory over UTEP. She tallied the game-winner in the 13th minute and had the first multiple goal game of her career. Ley found the net twice and had an assist in the 63rd minute, after she sent the ball into sophomore Asha Richardson for the header. Ley also helped UNM snap a six-game winning streak for the Miners (7-2-0) and broke the UTEP school record of 568:48 scoreless minutes.

Abeyta, hailing from Albuquerque, N.M. (St. Pius X HS), helped UNM shutout the Miners Sunday and scored her first goal of the season. She played every minute of the match and helped orchestrate a back line that only allowed eight shots.

The Lobos (4-3-0) return to action on Sept. 21-22 in the Pac-10/MWC Challenge held in Seattle, Wash. The two-day event will feature UNM taking on Washington State at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 and Washington on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. For more information about the UNM women's soccer program visit www.GoLobos.com.
