ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--- The University of New Mexico men's tennis team is headed to the University of Tulsa who will host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championship this week in Tulsa, Okla. It marks the fourth year that the University of Tulsa will host the event.
The tournament begins Saturday Oct. 2 with two days of prequalifying matches, followed by three days of main qualifying matches. The tournament will finish up on Oct. 10 after four days of main draw play.
Six Lobos will be traveling to Tulsa to compete. In the first round of the tournament Carl Ho, Joe Wood, Jadon Phillips, and Phil Anderson will be competing for prequalifying wins. Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar will play for wins in the qualifying round of singles. Seeing action in the qualifying round for doubles match-ups will be the New Mexico duo Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson.
The duo of Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar will headline the main draw doubles tournament for the Lobos. The teammates have had a great start to their season competing in two tournaments leading up to this weekend. In the Midland Collegiate Invitational the twosome made it to the semi-finals after defeating a team from Rice University. They gain momentum the following weekend when they traveled to Denver, Colo. for the University of Denver Fall Invitational where they captured the doubles title after beating a duo from University of Minnesota.
The six lobos also competed last year at the All-American Championship, all playing as singles. Carl Ho had a strong showing, making it all the way to the qualifying round where he was defeated by Alex Stemchev from Auburn University.
The players are chosen for the event based upon their national ranking from the prior season. Currently 268 singles and doubles teams are chosen for prequalifying, qualifying, and main draw play. Information for the tournament can be found at both the ITA website and the University of Tulsa athletics website.
