The winds were coming in strong at Lobo Field today, but the New Mexico softball team kept its focus, defeating in-state rival New Mexico State in both games of a doubleheader. The Lobos (11-12) won the first game against the Aggies (17-9) 9-8 and coasted to an 8-0 victory in five innings for the second game. New Mexico extended its winning streak to nine games, making it the longest win streak for the team since 2000.
The Lobos are back in home action next weekend as they host the Airport University Inn Lobo Classic March 17-19. UC Riverside, South Dakota State and Texas Tech will make the trip to participate in the tournament.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico capitalized on a seventh inning hitting surge to down New Mexico State 9-8 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Lobos produced four runs on six hits in their final at bat with freshman third baseman Analise Rubalcava driving in the winning run on a single to left field.
Rubalcava went 4-for-5 in the game with three RBI, one double, and a season first home run. Sophomore Lindsey Elcess went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one double. Senior Cassie Chavez hit her second season home run and had two RBI in the game.
New Mexico State was ahead 3-0 entering the bottom of third inning as New Mexico came back to score two runs off back-to-back RBI doubles by Elcess and Rubalcava. The Lobos then came back in the fourth inning to tag on two more runs and take the lead after Chavez homered for 2 RBI.
The Aggies would score one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull them ahead 6-4. In the bottom of the sixth, Rubalcava had a solo homer to cut the lead to 6-5, but the Aggies came back in the top of the seventh to extend their lead with two more runs.
With New Mexico down 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore Ashley Allen started off the Lobos with a double to right field. Catcher Liz Young then came up to hit a single and advance Allen over to third. Jennifer Deitrich slapped the ball to shorstop to get the single and bring Allen home for New Mexico first run of the inning. New Mexico State's pitcher Sarah Seagraves eventually loaded the bases and walked one run in to give the Aggies only a one run lead. Elcess then came to the plate and hit a single RBI to tie the game. With bases still loaded, Rubalcava hit a single to left center for the game-winning RBI.
Junior pitcher Caley Peterson earned the win for New Mexico, improving her overall record to 2-2 while Seagraves (10-5) took the loss, allowing the nine runs on 18 hits over 6.1 innings in the circle.

Pitcher Caley Peterson earned her second win of the day for New Mexico and her third overall, bringing her season record to 3-2. In five complete innings, Peterson shutdown the Aggies' bats, holding them to five hits. She also struckout five and had no walks.
New Mexico scored one run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the third, but it was the fifth inning where New Mexico unleashed its bats, scoring five runs to end the game in a run rule.
Losing pitcher for New Mexico State was Kim Watson (6-2), allowing seven runs on 10 hits over four innings of work.
