Box Score |  Nov. 17 Lobos vs. Colorado State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team will be the No. 6 seed in the Mountain West Conference Tournament next week following this afternoon's loss to No. 17 Colorado State, 30-22, 30-27, 31-29. The Lobos finished the regular season 16-12 overall and 7-9 in the MWC. UNM is expected to play BYU in the MWC quarterfinals, pending tonight's results.

"I thought all season that Colorado State is the best team in the league, from the beginning to the end," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "We played not to lose and we need to take it to the next level. I thought Games Two and Three were great games, but we didn't finish and get it done."

The Lobos struggled in Game One as Colorado State built an 8-4 lead. The Lobos tied the Rams two times at 11 and 14, but were never able to take the lead. CSU won the game, 30-22.

Game Two saw the Lobos battle back from an 18-13 deficit to close to within one at 21-20. Rose Morris kept the Lobos within striking range late in the game with a kill at 28-27, but two kills by the Rams gave CSU at 2-0 game lead.

It looked like the Lobos were going to send the match into a fourth game, as UNM led for the majority of Game Three. The Lobos jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never trailed until CSU tied the game at 28. Back-to-back ball handling errors gave the Rams the lead, 29-28. An attack error by UNM gave the Rams the match, 31-29.

Lisa Meeter led the Lobos with 13 kills, while Jeanne Fairchild and Rose Morris had 11 each. Jade Michaelsen recorded 42 assists and Kelsi Phillips led with 10 digs.

Junior Gayle Tripp moved into second place on the UNM all-time career digs list this evening with six digs to improve her total to 1,117. She earned the mark during Game Two.

The Mountain West Conference Tournament begins on Wednesday, Nov. 21 with a first round game, followed by the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 22. All the action will be available on GoLobos.com
