Lobos Battle with Boise for First MW Victory, 6-5

The New Mexico Lobos travel to El Paso, Texas, May 1-2, for a three-game series at UTEP. The series is likely to feature plenty of action as UNM leads the nation in home runs with 77 and the Miners' Camilla Carrera is the individual leader with 29 long balls.

New Mexico (25-18, 1-5) is fresh off its first Mountain West victory of 2012, having defeated Boise State 6-5 in eight innings on April 29. The Lobos went 1-2 on the weekend, dropping the first two games of the series, 8-5 and 8-6, respectively.

The Lobos-Broncos series will be aired May 2 on tape delay on TheMtn. The games will air at 3:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. (all MT).

Jessica Garcia led UNM in the series going 7-for-12 on the weekend. The Lobo senior catcher tallied four RBIs and scored four runs. Garcia had two home runs, including her game-winning blast in the top of the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon. Her four RBIs in the series puts her season total at 54, which ties the UNM single season record set by Danielle Cassara in 1999.

Stefanie Carramusa was 6-for-12 on the weekend and hit two home runs putting her season total to 20 and her career total to 36. The junior shares the No. 1 spot in UNM history books with Kathy Moore (1998-2001) for career home runs.

Kaela DeBroeck (12-6, 5.56 ERA) was Sunday's winning pitcher. In eight innings the junior faced 36 batters, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. DeBroeck walked four and struck out four.

Carrie Sheehan (8-5) took the loss on April 27. The freshman hurler leads UNM's pitching staff with a 4.27 ERA in 25 appearances and 98.1 innings pitched.

Junior Kari Gutierrez (5-7, 4.86 ERA) threw on April 28 and suffered the loss.

UTEP The Miners (14-36, 3-21 C-USA) dropped their final three regular-season Conference USA games at Tulsa over the weekend, 4-2, 12-4 (5) and 11-0 (5). The three-game series with UNM are UTEP's final regular-season contests before beginning the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., May 10.

UTEP bats .285 as a team and is led by Camilla Carrera. The senior leads the nation in home runs with 29 (.58 a contest). For games through April 22, Carrera also claimed the No. 1 spot for slugging percentage 1.206 and was fifth among Div. I players in batting average (.460 -- .450 as of April 29) as well as RBIs per game (1.3).

Colleen Hohman has logged 135.2 innings in the circle for the Miners and is 5-18 with a 5.88 ERA. Cynthia Villastrigo is UTEP's other main pitcher. The junior is 6-13 in 29 appearances and owns a 7.68 ERA.

SERIES HISTORY The Lobos own a 6-5 advantage over UTEP. Last season to teams played in El Paso and split. UNM took the first game 10-4 and the Miners won the second, 10-3.

UNM will return to Lobo Field, May 4-6, for a three-game series against UNLV. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. MT.
