ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Head coach Jeff Nelson and assistant coaches Lisa Beauchene and Ben Wallis are pleased to announce that Lise Rugland of Tananger, Norway has signed a National Letter of Intent and will be a member of the Lobo volleyball program starting fall 2013.

Rugland is a 5-foot-9 setter who will graduate in June from Sauda Vidergående Skole, department ToppVolley Norway -- a volleyball-focused institution-- in Sand, Norway.

"Lise is an outstanding addition to our program," assistant coach Beauchene said. "She brings great experience playing at an elite level for the Norwegian U17 and U19 National Teams as well as the highest club level.

"On all of her teams, Lise has shown leadership qualities that we're excited to combine with our current roster. She's also shown excellent marks in the classroom. We're thrilled that she's chosen to be a Lobo."

Rugland's volleyball resume is an impressive one.

She has competed with ToppVolley Norway for the past three seasons under coach Magnus Borge Johansen in the Norwegian 1st Division. Rugland and her squad finished fifth overall in their division for the 2012-13 season and were second overall for the 2011-12 season.

In addition to attending and competing for ToppVolley Norway, Rugland has over three years of experience playing on Norwegian national teams. She was a member of the U17 national team that placed third at the Northern European Volleyball Zonal Association (NEVZA) Championships in 2010. She is currently a setter and captain of the Norwegian U19 national team which placed second at the NEVZA Championships 2012.

Rugland is also a setter/right-side hitter for two club teams: KFUM Stavanger U19 and UiS Volley -- an elite team that competes in the highest division of club volleyball in the country.

Rugland and her KFUM Stavanger team placed second at the 2012 Norwegian Championships while her UiS Volley team finished fifth in the Norwegian Elite League in 2013. Rugland was named Most Valuable Player in three matches within the Norwegian Elite League this season.

"I am very excited about Lise, as she will come in with some really good experience and is training at a very high level," Nelson said. "She is extremely athletic and has the ability to hit and set. She is also an outstanding student that will continue our tradition of great academics. I think she will bring a different perspective to our team and I look forward to coaching her."

Rugland is part of a recruiting class that Nelson has touted as the best in his six seasons at UNM. Cassie House, Devanne Sours and Julia Warren, all of New Mexico, will join UNM for the 2013-14 season and signed their NLIs back in November 2012.
