DENTON, Texas - After the slugfest the New Mexico softball team (25-16) put on yesterday, North Texas and Harvard took their revenge, beating the Lobos 7-1 and 8-0, respectively today at Denia Park in day two of the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic. The Lobos managed only seven hits and one run in both games combined.
Game one started out close, with the score at 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. North Texas scored its first run in the bottom of the first as Heather Bostic singled to score Katy Maxey who led off the inning with a single to left field. New Mexico got the run back in the top of the second with senior Sabrina Sandberg's leadoff home run.
The Mean Green pulled away in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits. Christen Jonse doubled to center to score Monica Garcia who lead off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Kelei Walker singled then advanced to second and finally third on a error by freshman Ryanne Hodgins that allowed Jonse to score. Stephanie Cranmer immediately followed with a single to center that scored Walker. Susan Waters drove in the final two runs of the inning with her single to right. North Texas added a final run in the sixth when Walker reached on a fielder's choice that scored Jonse.
Maxey pitched the four-hit complete game for the win. Senior Amy Dumas (6-9) suffered the loss, tossing 4.2 innings for eight hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts. Junior Ashley Perkins pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing two hits and one earned run.
Junior Cassie Chavez was a perfect 3-3 at the plate and Sandberg had the only other hit off Maxey. Walker, Bostic and Jonse were all 2-3 for North Texas.
Cecily Gordon got the Crimson on the board with her three-run home run in the bottom of the first that drove home Lauren Bettinelli and Lauren Stenfanchik. Williamson then reached on a fielder's choice in the third that score Kerry Flaherty. Sara Williamson then scored on a passed ball with one out later that inning. Monica Montijo immediately folowed with a single to bring home Erin Halpenny and give Harvard the 6-0 lead.
Lauren Brown ended the game with two outs in the fifth, hitting a triple to score Montijo and Halpenny for the 8-0 win.
Bettinelli threw the three-hit complete game, striking out four and walking none. Perkins (12-4) took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings for five hits, five earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Dumas pitched two innings of relief, giving up three hits, two earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
New Mexico completes the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic tomorrow, playing North Texas and Northern Colorado. The Lobos start the day at 10 a.m. with Northern Colorado and end with North Texas at 3 p.m.
