The 34th-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team is in 8th place after the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Playing in its first competition of the spring season, the Lobos shot a 25-over 313 on the par-72, 6,219-yard Coco Beach Golf Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. No. 9 Georgia and TCU are tied for first at 302 in the 16-team field.
Junior Jodi Ewart is the top Lobo after shooting a 2-over 74, tying for eighth place. She is two shots behind Indiana's Laura Nochta, Oklahoma's Kendall Dye and TCU's Valentine Derrey, who shot even-par 72.
Senior Morgan Grantham shot 77 and is tied for 22nd. Junior Britney Choy and freshman Rebecca Hellbom both had an 81 and are tied for 58th place. Senior Mikaela Backstedt is tied for 63rd after shooting 82. Freshman Sarah Salvo, who is competing as an individual, had an 84.
Second-round action begins Monday at 6 a.m. Mountain Time. The final round is Tuesday.
