ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- In recognition of Black History Month, the historically-black fraternities and sororities at UNM will perform a unity stroll during halftime of the Lobo Women's Basketball game versus Colorado State at 6 p.m. (MT) on Saturday. A stroll is rhythmic parading.  It is underscored by African based aesthetics, and incorporates hand signs, calls, and chants.  Each Black Greek Letter Organization (BGLO) has its own unique strolling style.

The historically-black Greek Letter fraternities and sororities were established during a time when people of African descent were not welcomed at universities throughout the United States.  These organizations - which are affectionately referred to as the Divine 9 and make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) - include the following: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated; and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.  Founded between 1906 and 1963, each organization in the Divine 9 has chapters throughout the United States, as well as international chapters.

Renowned members of the Divine 9 include: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated; Phylicia Rashad, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Colin Kaepernick, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; Michael Jordan, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; Soledad O'Brien, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Emmitt Smith, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated; Sheryl Underwood, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated; Victoria Rowell, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated; and Basketball Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.
