COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- New Mexico women's soccer defeated Air Force, 3-0, Saturday at Washburn Field home of the Colorado College Tigers. The Lobos have clinched a berth in next weeks Mountain West Conference Tournament held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Seniors Bridgette Sanchez and Eryn Paetz scored along with freshman Markee Nobriga to highlight the victory for UNM over the Falcons. The Lobos finished the regular-season with an 8-6-4 overall mark and 2-2-3 in the MWC. Air Force fell to 3-11-3 this fall and 0-4-1 in conference action.
"I'm very pleased with the way the team performed because they played with a lot of character," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "We played with a lot of determination and we didn't let ourselves get frustrated. It's always nice to finish the regular season on a winning note and carry momentum into the conference tournament."
UNM dominated the first period after scoring two goals. Paetz broke the scoreless tie on a free kick that was a direct shot past the Falcon goalkeeper and put the Lobos up 1-0. Sanchez gave UNM a 2-0 lead heading into halftime, when she scored on an assist from Hannah Hand. The goal was Sanchez's team leading fifth of the year and came on a one-on-one play in front of the net.
Nobriga scored the final goal for the Lobos with eight minutes remaining in the match on an assist from Hand. Nobriga headed the ball past the keeper and extended the UNM lead to 3-0. Hand had two assists against the Falcons and helped the Lobos close the season in winning fashion.
UNM shutout its seventh opponent this fall and have only allowed one goal in the last three matches. Sophomore Shannon Adragna played 90 minutes in the net and had three saves. Adragna finishes the regular-season with 54 saves and six shutouts.
The Lobos advance to the MWC Championship next week, Nov. 1-4. The official bracket and schedule will be announced Sunday, Oct. 29 by the league office. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
