Lobos Head to Arizona Desert For 2004 Outdoor Opener

The University of New Mexico men's and women's track teams kick off the 2004 outdoor season tomorrow at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The Lobos will be one of 14 collegiate teams, including the host Arizona Wildcats at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. Over 1,100 athletes will compete in the high school and college sections of the meet, in addition to the several track clubs in attendance. Action gets underway on Saturday at 8 a.m. MT.

The field will feature squads from: Washington State, along with teams from British Columbia, BYU, Central Arizona, Glendale Community College, Idaho, Mesa Community College, Minnesota, New Mexico State, Pima Community College, Wayne State and Western State.

New Mexico makes its first trip to Tucson since the 2001 season, competing in the first outdoor meet under head coach Matt Henry. Seniors Mark Johnson and Erin Johnson, and junior Ben Ortega were the only current Lobos to place in 2001, the trio's first year at UNM. Ortega placed third in the 5,000, while Mark Johnson was eighth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump. Erin Johnson, meanwhile, was seventh high jump.
