FULLERTON, Calif. --- The 16th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette softball team defeated New Mexico, 9-0, in five innings Sunday in the final game of the Judi Garman Classic. The Lobos had four hits in the game including a double by junior Katie Gilmore. New Mexico fell to 9-14 on the season while the nationally-ranked Ragin Cajuns improved to 15-5 overall.
Louisiana-Lafayette had 14 hits in the game including four extra base hits.
The Ragin Cajuns scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and erupted for six runs in the third inning. Codi Runyan led off the third with a solo home run and started the rally. Runyan was 2-for-2 in the game with three RBI and a run scored.
LLU added two more runs in the fifth to secure the 9-0 run-rule victory.
Four different Lobos had hits in the game and stranded five runners on-base.
Lobo freshman Danielle Castro (2-4) started and took the loss. Castro threw three innings allowing 11 hits and seven runs. Freshman Kerry Hodgins came on in relief and pitched the final two innings. Hodgins gave up two runs on three hits.
Ashley Brignac (3-0) pitched a complete game four-hitter. Brignac had seven strikeouts for the Ragin Cajuns.
New Mexico returns to action on March 19 at Seattle. The Lobos will face Seattle for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. MT.
