SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--The University of New Mexico picked up its first ever win in Salt Lake City with a 1-0 win over the Utah Utes this evening at Ute Field. The win was also the Lobos' first win over Utah since a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Nov. 3, 2005. Sophomore Jennifer Williams picked up her seventh game-winner of the season and tied a single season school record for most game-winners in a season. New Mexico improves to 11-3-2 on the season and 3-2-0 in MWC play. Utah falls to 7-8-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in MWC play.
"We are such a young group," said head coach Kit Vela. "We came out nervous and not all together in the first half. We got back on track and got a great goal from Jennifer Williams in the second half. We played like warriors and held on to the win. Utah is a great team and I give credit to our girls to battle to the end and for believing in each other."
Williams got the Lobos on the board in the 53rd minute, as she bent a corner kick inside the near post and into the back of the net for the game-winner. The goal was Williams 10th of the season and 14th of her career. Williams is now tied for the most game-winners in school history. She also moves into a tie for fifth place all-time for goals scored in a season with 10 and is tied for fourth place all-time with fourteen career goals.
The Lobo defense held steady the entire match only allowing six shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Kelli Cornell picked up her 11th win and 10th shutout of the season. Cornell is now tied for first place all-time at UNM for shutouts in a season. Cornell also picked up a season high six saves in the shutout win.
The Lobos head to sunny California and will play San Diego State Friday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. MT and non conference foe Cal State Fullerton Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. MT. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
