Game 1 notes vs. Southern (9/1/12)

Team:

*UNM's margin of victory (45 points) was its largest since a 70-7 win over San Diego State on Oct. 18, 2008. It was also the most points by a Lobo team since that game against the Aztecs.

*The Lobos' 38 points in the second quarter are the most since the school started keeping track of the statistic in 1946. UNM scored 33 vs. New Mexico State in 1948 and 33 vs. Northern Arizona Most points In that quarter, New Mexico scored three TDs in a span of 1:54.

*The Lobos rushed for more than 300 yards in a game for the first time since amassing 419 against SDSU in 2008. UNM scored on offense, defense and special teams.

*The Lobos won their first season opener since 2005 (a 24-22 win over UNLV). They improved to 64-47-4 all-time in season openers and 53-21-2 at home in season openers. UNM now is 73-37-4 all-time in home openers.

Offense:

*Demarcus Rogers rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries with one TD. It was UNM's 100-yard rusher since Demond Dennis ran for 133 vs. Colorado State on Nov. 21, 2009.

*B.R. Holbrook's 16-yard TD pass to WR Ty Kirk was the Lobos' first since the opening play against UNLV on Nov. 12, 2011, an 80-yard Holbrook to Deon Long pass.

*True freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche scored the first TD of his career on a 7-yard run with 8:24 left in the second quarter. He completed the first pass of his career to true freshman tight end Chris Edling with just less than two minutes left in the third quarter. The reception was the first of Edling's career.

*Redshirt freshman Jhurell Pressley scored the first TD of his career on a 5-yard run with 8:37 left in the first quarter.

*WR Ty Kirk's 16-yard TD reception with 14:54 left in the first half was his 122nd career reception, tying him with Dwight Counter (2000-2003) for ninth place on the school's career receptions list. *

WR Carlos Wiggins scored his first career TD on a 7-yard run with 14:56 left in the fourth quarter.

Defense:

Joseph Harris' 15-yard fumble return for a TD was the team's first since A.J. Butler returned a fumble 27 yards for a score against Utah on Sept. 18, 2010.

*True freshman Cranston Jones returned an interception 39 yards for a TD with 5:27 left in the third quarter.

Special teams:

Sophomore Chase Clayton's 98-yard return for a TD was the first return of his career and the first kickoff return for a score since Deon Long's 98-yarder against Sam Houston State on Sept. 24, 2011.

*Junior Justus Adams hit his first career field-goal attempt, from 39 yards out, with 31 second left in the first half.
