COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior guard Katie Montgomery of the University of New Mexico women's basketball team was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, marking her second career honor.
Montgomery, a 5-10 junior from Lincoln, Neb., led the Lobos to a 76-68 victory over Big 12 foe and 12th ranked Texas, Nov. 18. She tallied 13 points and collected six boards against the Longhorns. Montgomery also led the Lobos to a 2-1 record in the preseason WNIT and was the only Lobo to be named to the preseason WNIT all-tournament team. New Mexico defeated Oral Roberts (69-52) and California (55-46) before falling to #25/#25 Oklahoma (74-63). Against Oral Roberts, Montgomery set or tied a career high in rebounds (9), steals (5) and assists (6). In the win against the Bears, she scored 11 points, dished out six assists and forced two steals. In the semifinals against Oklahoma, Montgomery played all 40 minutes while tallying 11 points and grabbing five boards.
For her performance in the preseason WNIT and against Texas, Montgomery averaged 12.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.75 assists. She shot 45.5 percent from the field (15-for-33) and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line (.875).
The Lobos return to action on November 25-26 for the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament. New Mexico will play Marist at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, while Oklahoma State and Idaho will play at 6:00 p.m.
