Women's Soccer Signs 10 Incoming Players to Squad

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--The University of New Mexico women's soccer team has signed 10 incoming players to National Letters of Intent today as announced by head coach Kit Vela. The women's soccer program welcomes, Kelly Angerosa, Ashley Espinoza, Sinead Fleming, Lauren Irwin, Sidney George, Chandler Guetz, Shelby Luna, Rachel Montoya, Channing Perea and Stephanie Rowe to the Lobo family.

"This recruiting class is full of talent," said head coach Kit Vela. "We brought in a defensive group of players with a good mix of offensive players as well. It's a very solid class from top to bottom. The majority of the girls are coming from winning programs. We did a good job of keeping the best New Mexicans here in the state. We are really happy about the group we brought in."

The incoming recruiting class brings a wealth of experience at both the high school level and the Elite Club team level.

The Lobos will return 84 percent of the goals scored last year. New Mexico returns 23 players, 11 of which have starting experience. The future looks bright with the addition of the 11 premier players joining the team.

A four-year letterman for head coach Uwe Balzis... a member of the 2007 5A State Championship team... named 5A All-State from 2006-08...named to the 5A All-District first team 2006-08 and second team in 2005... 2008 team captain for Rio Rancho HS... was named 2005 high school Rookie of the Year a member of the 2007 Rio Vista State Championship team... played for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) Travel Team 2006-07... former teammate of current Lobos Courtney and Megan Carpenter...

Coach Vela on Angerosa:
Kelly is hungry for the game and she is a student of the game. She's a great kid who comes from a great family. I'm really excited about her energy and her desire to get better at the next level.

Ashley Espinoza • Albuquerque, N.M. • Midfielder • 5-3 • West Mesa HS
Lettered four years in soccer for head coach Dan Sanchez... was named to the 5A All-District first team all four years of high school... named 5A All-State Honorable Mention in 2006 and 2007... named to the 2007 and 2008 All-Academic team... received a certificate of First Honors for earning a 4.0 grade point average every semester of high school... played with the six-time state champ Alameda Flash for seven years under head coach John Shepard.

Coach Vela on Espinoza:
Ashley is quick and technical with great vision. We love her tenacity and her work ethic. I think she is going to be fantastic over her career here.

Sinead Fleming • Pasadena, Calif. • Defender • 5-3 • Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy
Played soccer for four years for head coach Frank Pace... earned All-LA-84 CIF-SS third team honors... named to the Pasadena Star News 2008 All-Area first team...was a member of the 2008 GU17 Gold Division winning Real So Cal Club who were also a 2007 semifinalist at the League Cup and a 2007 National Cup Quarterfinalist, under head coach Adolfo Perez

Coach Vela on Fleming:
Sinead is an outstanding outside back who, comes from the same back round as Hannah Hand. She has learned a lot from her high school coach (Frank Pace) and her club coach Adolfo Perez. She is fearless, fast, and aggressive and she is going to be an outstanding outside back.

Lauren Irwin • Anaheim, Calif. • Defender/Midfielder • 5-6 • Canyon HS
A four-year letterman for head coach Walter Camargo... a member of the 2008 league champion team... earned a spot on the 2007 Century All-League second team... named honorable mention All-League her freshman and sophomore years (2005-06)... won the 2006 Coaches Award for her high school team... named team captain in her senior year... was a scholar athlete and made the honor roll all four years of high school... played for the 2005 USYSA Regional and Nation Champion So Cal Blues... was a also a member of the Cal South ODP Program 2004-06, and the 2006 State ODP Regional Champion team under head coach Larry Draluck.

Coach Vela on Irwin:
Lauren is probably our most complete utility player. She can fit many roles and be outstanding at every position. She is an all-around tremendous player and a leader on the field. Lauren is great in the air, great with the ball and has great vision. She will have a huge impact in her first year.

Sidney George • Huntington Beach, Calif. • Goalkeeper • 5-7 • Huntington Beach HS
Lettered all four years for head coach Matt Wells... awarded the Principles Award for academic success... played for the 2007-08 Gold League Champion Laguna Niguel Soccer Club... gave up the least amount of goals in the league in 2008-09.

Coach Vela on George:
Sidney will add competition, tenacity and enthusiasm to what Kelly Cornell already brings to the game. She is unbelievably athletic with a great attitude and has the ability to be as great as she wants to be.

Chandler Guetz • Kiowa, Colo. • Midfielder • 5-6 • Ponderosa HS
Three year letterman for head coach Jim Engles... named first team All-Continental League in 2008 and earned a Coaches Award... in 2007 was named to the All- Continental League second team and was named Most Valuable Player... in 2006 named Honorable Mention All-Continental League as well as the team Rookie of the Year...plays for the Colorado State Cup 2006-09 Champion Real Colorado Soccer Club as well as the 2008 USASA U23 National Champions... named 2009 team captain for Real Colorado under head coach Lorne Donelson.

Coach Vela on Guetz:
We are very excited about Chandler. She is strong holding midfielder, she holds down the fort for her club team Real Colorado and I expect her to do the same thing here. She's not complicated but she is also the thread that keeps the team together. She is tremendous on defense and has the ability to start the attack on offense.

Lettered four years in soccer for head coach Shannon and Dan Martinez... played on the 2008 Del Ray League championship team... named first team All-League in 2008... awarded All-CIF honors in 2007-08... named Offensive Player of the Year in 2005-06... named to the South Holiday Classic all-tournament team in 2008...played at the same high school as head women's soccer coach Kit Vela... a member of the San Diego Surf Soccer Club, under head coach Jenny Tandea

Coach Vela on Luna:
Shelby is small but plays like she is ten feet tall and she has the heart of a lion. She can play multiple positions and she can fit in anywhere. We are very excited about Shelby and her enthusiasm for the game.

Rachel Montoya • Albuquerque, N.M. • Midfielder/Forward • 5-3 • St. Pius X
A three year player for head coach David Sullivan... a member of three state championship teams from 2005-07... a three-time first team all-state and three-time first team all-district award winner... earned two first team all-metro awards... named the 2008 District Player of the Year... will leave St. Pius as the all-time leading point scorer and the all-time leader in assists... named 2008 team Captain... a member of the six-time state champ Alameda Flash, under head coach John Shepard.

Coach Vela on Montoya:
Rachel is very fast and very athletic. She has taken her game to another level. She's a very hard worker and very talented. We look forward to seeing how she develops.

Three letterman under Rusty Bailey (2006-07) and Jamil Brewer (2007-08)... high school team won the Ivy League Championship... named first team All-Ivy League... earned 2006-008 Scholar Athlete awards... played for the 2007 Far-West Regional League Champion and 2008 National Cup quarterfinalist, Legends FC, under head coach Eric Bushay.

Coach Vela on Perea:
Channing is a true left footed player. She played for a very successful club team that came out of no where. Channing is very skillful and very quick. She is a very quick left footed player who we look forward to seeing grow in this program.

Stephanie Rowe • Littleton, Colo • Midfielder/Forward • 5-5 • Chatfield Senior HS
Four year player for head coach Brock Blume... played on the 2007 and 2008 League Championship team... a two time first team Jeffco 5A All-Conference performer... 2008 Denver Post and Rocky Mtn. News all-Colorado honorable mention in 2007... 2008 Colorado HS Coaches Association All-State team... a member of the National Honor Society and the 2008 Academic All-State first team while making the Honor Roll all four years... played for the 2007 ODP Champion and 2005 State Champion Colorado Rush and a three time ODP All-State team performer.

Coach Vela on Rowe:
Stephanie plays very hard all the time. She is relentless against her opponents. She has done great things with the Colorado Rush and we look forward to seeing the same tenacity and ability here at the division one level.
