ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico women's soccer team has selected four senior players as captains. Goalkeeper Shannon Adragna and defenders Samantha Bevis, Kaci Paetz and Krista Peterson were selected by their teammates for ability to lead on the field and how to represent the Lobos and the University off of it. The four captains will lead the Lobos in to their first match of the season against Denver this Friday Aug. 22.
"I think they are good selections," said head coach Kit Vela, "These four players have been through the ups and downs of the program in their four years and mostly the ups. They have had three winning seasons and we are looking for a fourth. They've been the heart and soul for the last couple of years. They have all worked tremendously hard to get starting roles and I'm really proud of them."
Goalkeeper Shannon AdragnaThe Lobos top returning goalkeeper who has started since she was a sophomore... looks to be one of the top net minders in the Mountain West Conference... ranked in the top five in nine UNM single season and career records ... has a chance to leave UNM as one of the best goalkeepers in school history ... started 14 games in goal as the Lobos' top goalkeeper ... bested her single season goals against average with a 0.79 which ranks second in the UNM record book ... had 84 percent of the Lobos' saves with 54 and broke her own UNM school record by only allowing 12 goals ... logged 1,368 minutes and shutout 7 opponents ... named Academic All-Conference for the second straight year with a 3.09 grade point average.
Defender Samantha BevisUNM's top defender returns to hold down the middle of the defense for the Lobos ... will also be a threat to score from the back ... Started all 17 games at defender ... played a team high 1,610 minutes ... mangaged to score two goals from her defender spot including the first of her career at Tulsa Sept. 2 ... named Academic All-Conference for the fall with a 3.29 grade point average.
Defender Kaci PaetzStarted all 17 games for the Lobos ... logged 1,582 minutes that helped the Lobos defensivley to a school record for fewest goals allowed in a season (14) ... was a fall 2007 Academic All-Conference Award winner ... named to the 2007 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
Defender Krista PetersonA solid returning defender who brings experience and shut down capability to the 2008 season ... a two-year starter with 3,416 career minutes, the most of any returning player ... Started all 17 games at defender ... logged 1,477 minutes while helping the defense to a school record for fewest goals allowed in a season (14).
Sophomore Alexis Ball was chosen by her teammates as a captain in training.
