ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico baseball team (24-12, 6-3 MWC) won its first season series with the Arizona Wildcats (15-19, 3-6 Pac-10), claiming the final game 13-3 Tuesday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Lobos, winning three of four, haven't won a series since taking two of three in Tucson in 1994.
The Lobos added to Arizona's misery, tapping them for 18 hits, which ties with New Mexico's production on Feb. 19 for the most hits the Wildcats have surrendered all season. Not only that, UA's 10-run margin of deficit is the largest it has succumb to all season.
UNM scored three runs on three singles and three walks in the first, giving junior righty Quentin Andes some room to breathe. Sophomore second baseman Jordan Pacheco added another run in the second after doubling to left center to lead off the inning.
Andes held Arizona scoreless through the first four, scattering just five hits and was one strikeout shy of matching his Lobo career/season high.
In the Lobo half of the fourth, New Mexico recorded three consecutive singles from the bats of junior center fielder Matt Foote, sophomore third baseman Ian Hollick and sophomore catcher Drew McDonald, leading to a run, which put UNM up 5-0.
Brad Glenn ended Andes' shutout in the fifth with a solo home run to left field. But Andes wasn't shaken, throwing three more innings for a season and Lobo career-high 8 innings and five strikeouts.
Pacheco, who was 3-for-3 in his first three at bats, was one of five Lobos in the sixth to collect a hit and one of five to score a run as New Mexico extended its lead to nine. Senior shortstop Ryan Barba's RBI double and junior designated hitter Chris Carlson's two-run home run in the seventh left New Mexico leading 13-1.
Arizona scored one run in the eighth on a sacfice fly and one in the ninth on a double to center that was almost caught by Foote before losing it in the sun.
Pacheco led New Mexico in hits and runs, going 4-for-6 with three runs and a RBI. Carlson, who has hit a home run in five straight games and six of the last seven, tied with Hollick for a team-high three RBI. Carlson was 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Hollick was 2-for-3 with three walks and a run scored. Junior left fielder Jay Russell (1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored) also drew three walks. Glenn led the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Andes improved to 2-0, allowing 11 hits and two runs. Freshman righty Chace Lankford hurled an inning of relief for two hits, one run and one strikeout. UA freshman righty Cory Burns fell to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed three hits, three runs and three walks with two strikeouts in 1 inning.
New Mexico returns to Isotopes Park this weekend, hosting Utah for a three-game series. The Lobos and Utes play at noon on Friday and Sunday while Pack the Park is Saturday at 2:30. The teams will also finish the ninth inning of their game that was started at the MWC Preseason Tournament prior to Saturday's game.
