Albuquerque, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's basketball team wrapped up the 2010-11 season in style with the annual Men's Basketball Awards Banquet presented by Branch Law Firm. The banquet was hosted at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque, where the season tipped off in November when Bobby Knight came to town and spoke to Lobo fans.
Tonight however was about the 2010-11 team that won 22 games for a fourth straight season, and qualified for a fourth straight postseason appearance. Highlighting the group was Dairese Gary, the senior from Elkhart, Indiana who picked up three honors, including the night's top honor, winning the Bob King Most Valuable Player Award. Dairese also claimed award for Outstanding Defensive Player, and the team award for most assists (182).
Gary was honored as the team's lone senior, and for an amazing list of accomplishments, not the least of which was becoming the winningest Lobo among scholarship players in school history. Gary also broke the Mountain West records for career assists and starts.
A pair of juniors each picked up a pair of honors. Drew Gordon, who last week was honored by the website ballinisahabit.net for the nation's best dunk of the year, picked up awards for leading the team in rebounding and field goal percentage, winning the rebounding award despite missing the first nine games of the year. A.J. Hardeman also won two awards, one for drawing the most charges (16), and also winning the prestigious Lobo Award, presented to the program's best all-around student-athlete.
Other awards went to Kendall Williams for highest three-point percentage (.425), Cameron Bairstow for Most Improved Player, Jamal Fenton for Sixth Man of the Year, and Alex Kirk for Academic Achievement.
