ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's swimming and diving team traveled down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Orlando, Florida for their annual winter training and competition trip over the winter break.
The swimmers competed in the International Swimming Hall of Fame's Open Water Race, either participating in the 5K or 1 mile race. This race was exciting to most of the Lobos because they had never participated in anything like it before. According to head coach Tracy Ljone the waves were huge and the jellyfish abundant!!
Team finishes for the Lobos included second and third in the 5K race with times of 4:07.39 and 4:18.25 respectively. Senior Kelly Soldow and sophomore Kristen Naber had the best individual finishes for the Lobos. Naber completed the 5K race with a time of 1:19.44 and Soldow was close behind finishing in 1:21.26. Senior Jen Hale completed the race in 1:21.51 and juniors Ashley LaBree and Amina Adnan finished in 1:26.01 and 1:26.04 respectively.
"The ladies trained extremely hard and really pushed themselves and each other," head coach Tracy Ljone said. "I was so impressed with how the entire team stayed physically and mentally tough the entire trip. I can't say enough about how hard they trained and competed. The team is in amazing shape. It was a fun and rewarding trip and now we are ready for the second half of the season."
