FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of New Mexico softball team opened the Judi Garman Classic with a 12-4 loss to Purdue University, Wednesday evening at the dual diamond Titan Softball Complex. This is the first day of the five day tournament, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Lobos will be back in action against No. 1 Washington Thursday at 9:15 p.m. MT.
With two outs, Purdue scored two runs in the top of the first inning to start the game. Erika Petruzzi doubled down the left field line and scored off of a double by Jenna Alexander. Courtney singled to third base to advance Alexander, who later scored on a single by Maia Monchek.
In the top of the second inning, the Boilermakers scored three runs off of a wild pitch and a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Lobos scored two runs in the bottom of the third off four hits. Erin Brandow led off with a single to right center and advanced to second on a stolen base. Kalapsa singled up the middle to score Brandow for the first run. With Kalapsa on first, Katie Gilmore singled to left center to advance her to third. Garcia ended the inning with a single to right field to score the second run for New Mexico.
The Lobos scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to shorten the Purdue lead to 5-3. Duarte led off with a triple to center field and was drove in with a single by Jessica Lujan-Dresslar.
Purdue scored five more runs off of five hits in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the top of the seventh to widen their lead to 12-3. Monchek led the Boilermakers going 4-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs. Molly Garst and Alexander also came up big for Purdue. Garst went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored, and an RBI. Alexander went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.
New Mexico scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game 12-4. Cristin Anderson singled up the middle and advanced to second off of a ground out by Stefani Carramusa. Kalapsa singled up the middle to score Anderson for the final Lobo run.
Purdue's Suzie Rzegocki (5-5) earned the win for the Boilermakers with 10 strikeouts, while New Mexico's Samantha Gatson (3-5) received the loss in the circle for the Lobos. With the win Purdue improves to 7-8 on the season, while New Mexico falls to 9-13.
The Lobos will play four more games during the tournament, where they will play No. 1 Washington on Thursday. Followed by No. 2 Arizona on Friday and No. 23 Louisville on Saturday.
