ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 68 New Mexico men's tennis team (8-5) netted the 6-1 win over the Denver Pioneers today at the Lobo Tennis Club. It was the first time the two had met in dual competition since 1971.
No. 32 senior Divan Coetzee moved even closer to the all-time singles career and season win records with his 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over No. 94 Nejc Smole. Coetzee has a career record of 88-29 and a season record of 29-9. He is chasing Pepe Caballero's record of 95 career wins as well as Matt Amgwerd's season record of 34 wins.
Junior David Kowalski won his match at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3 over Hans Peter Gaber while classmate Ryan Stotland downed Urban Ljubic 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Also getting singles wins were sophomore Henry Gers and senior Jasmin Hodzic in the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Gers beat Jason Tan 6-3, 6-1 for his fifth straight win and Hodzic dropped Niki Popovic 6-2, 7-6.
The Lobos swept all three doubles matches for the first point of the day. Stotland and Kowalski battled for the 9-7 win at No. 1 over Smole and Gaber. Coetzee and Akhavan handed Zetterholm and Tan an 8-5 loss at No. 2. Gers and Hodzic had the best doubles score of the day, beating Ljubic and Popovic 8-4.
New Mexico will travel to in-state rival New Mexico State next Saturday, April 3 for an 11 a.m. match, its final test before conference play. The Lobos will return the following weekend for their final home games of the year, hosting Air Force, UNLV and San Diego State on April 9, 10, and 11, respectively.
