COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of New Mexico track and field athlete Kendall Spencer was named the Mountain West Men's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year this past Thursday by the head coaches at each MW institution.

Spencer, a San Mateo, Calif., product, is fresh off a victory in the long jump at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho on March 9. His 26-foot, 3.5-inch leap secured him New Mexico's first national title since 2010 and the top spot in the UNM and MW record books for the long jump.

Spencer was also named a First-Team All-American selection by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for his performance at the indoor championships.

This is the first MW Student-Athlete of the Year award for the Lobos since 2009 when Lee Emanuel and Sandy Fortner swept the honors recognizing the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of indoor track and field.

TCU's Whitney Gipson earned the award for the women.
