TAYLORSVILLE, Utah - The University of New Mexico softball team beats Utah, 10-6. With the win, the Lobos end their 17-game losing streak, Thursday afternoon at Bruin Field. Senior Cristin Anderson went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, three runs, two stolen bases and a walk. The Lobos now travel to Provo, Utah to take on BYU for two games on Friday and Saturday. Both games against the Cougars will be nationally televised via BYU-TV. BYU-TV can be seen on Comcast channel 289, DIRECTV channel 374, on the Dish Network on channel 9403, and channel 392 on Cable One in Rio Rancho.
The Lobos started out strong when Anderson led off the top of the first inning with a single up the middle. Anderson then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Jessica Garcia. With a runner on third, Erin Brandow hit a sacrifice fly to left field to get the early 1-0 lead for New Mexico.
The Utes struck back with a solo home run from leadoff hitter Brooke Olson to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Anderson hit a home run to center field to get the lead in the top of the third. Then with two outs, Brandow singled to third base. Stefani Carramusa hit a two-run home run to left center to end the inning up 4-1.
Utah took back the lead in the bottom of the third scoring four runs on three hits. The Utes scored two runs on two doubles and two more runs on a two-run home run to lead 4-3 going into the fourth.
The Lobos tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning. Shaunte Duarte led off the inning with a walk to get on base. Cassandra Kalapsa singled with a bunt to get runners on first and second. Jessica Lujan-Dresslar hit a sacrifice bunt to the first baseman to move the runners. Kerry Hodgins tied the game with a sacrifice fly in foul territory to score Duarte.
New Mexico scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead. Kalapsa reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second with a single by Lujan-Dresslar. Kalapsa then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to retake the lead. Anderson hit her second home run of the game with a two-run shot to left center to score Lujan-Dresslar. Garcia singled down the left field line to get on base and scored on a two-run home run by Brandow to end the inning ahead 10-5.
The Utes got one more run in the seventh off of a home run by Kara Foster to end the game down 10-6. Ashley Smuda (19-12) got the loss in the circle giving up five earned runs. With the loss Utah falls to 23-24 and 3-6 in Mountain West Conference play.
Kaela DeBroeck (6-16) earned the win for the Lobos (11-31, 1-8 MWC), pitching in relief with three strikeouts. Brandow went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs and a home run. Carramusa went 1-for-4 on a two-run home run. Garcia went 2-for-4 with a run. Duatre, Kalapsa, and Lujan-Dresslar each went 1-for-3 with a run.
