PROVO, Utah --- New Mexico junior Analise Rubalcava hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to help UNM rally past BYU, 3-1, Thursday night at Gail Miller Park. The Lobos pulled out the victory after scoring three runs in the final inning and improved to 16-12 on the season and 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos won their first game in Provo since 2003 and snapped a 13-game losing skid against the Cougars.
UNM received a solid outing from senior Kelly Ninemire. Ninemire threw a complete game allowing a run on six hits. BYU dropped to 21-13 with the loss and fell to 0-1 in league play.
Sophomore Katie Gilmore led off the seventh with a double to right center. Rubalcava followed with her second home run of the season and it was a shot over the center field fence. Senior Ashley Allen continued the rally with a walk then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Samantha Hughes laid down a bunt single down the third base line that allowed Allen to score. UNM led 3-1 after the inning.
Ninemire gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh but slammed the door for UNM.
Gilmore led UNM at the plate going 2-for-3. Rubalcava was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Hughes was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
BYU scored its only run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Monica Gonzalez.
Game two is currently underway in Provo. UNM plays Utah Friday at 4 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
