Albuquerque, NM --- The men's basketball team might have back-to-back Mountain West championships to their names, but they put all of that aside for a friendly game of softball. Well, as friendly as staff vs. players can be anyways. The annual game saw the staff, headed by head coach Steve Alford, take down the players team for a fourth straight season, winning last Wednesday 19-3.
The staff team got things going early as assistant coach Craig Neal hit the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first for a solo homerun over the 200-foot fence in left field. The staff team took an 6-0 lead before the players scratched a run home in the third. With the score 8-1 in the fourth, Alex Kirk launched a long home run to center to make it 8-3, and the players quickly had thoughts of a monumental upset. Those thoughts were quickly done away with.
Another Neal home run, a shot by Wyking Jones, and few defensive lapse spelled an 11-run outburst over the final two innings, giving the staff the win in a game that was fairly close for a while.
Coming off a 30-5 season, the game was an annual contest to start the year for the basketball team. The Lobos open their season with exhibition games on November 3 and 6 before they officially reopen The Pit with their season opener on Saturday, November 13 at 7:00 pm against the University of Detroit.
