LoboTV: Highlights vs. BYU
Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.---The University of New Mexico women's soccer team stunned No. 8 BYU in double overtime at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday night. The Lobos, who are ranked 25 in the most recent Soccer America poll, handed the Cougars their second loss of the season in front of a crowd of 2,829 fans on Senior Night. It was the fourth win over BYU in New Mexico school history.

Four Lobos played their last matches at the UNM Soccer Complex tonight. Seniors Kerrin Stephan, Kate Wyrick, Liz Lambert and Rachel Fields donned the Cherry and Silver for the last time at home.

Fittingly, senior Kate Wyrick scored the game-winning goal for UNM as she found the back of the net in the 102nd minute of double overtime off an assist from Jennifer Williams. The goal was the second of the season for Wyrick and the sixth of her career.

"It was pretty great," Wyrick said of the game. "There was so much at stake. BYU played an awesome game. I have to hand it to them. It was a back and fourth game. We both hit the posts a number of times. I think we just wanted it more.

New Mexico is now the only undefeated team in Mountain West Conference competition and sits atop the conference ranks at 4-0-0. The win gave the Lobos a 6-0-0 record on their home field, securing the first undefeated season at the UNM Soccer Complex since joining the MWC.

"Whoever won this game went into first (in MWC standings) by themselves," head coach Kit Vela explained. "The girls were pretty pumped for it. No matter what (BYU) threw at us we kept our composure, kept our patience and waited our turn."

The Lobo defense recorded its 10th shutout of the season while facing 16 shots by BYU, eight of them came on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Cornell was credited with eight saves, two of which came in the final 20 seconds of regulation, preventing the Cougars from finding the back of the net.

New Mexico improved to 10-1-3 on the season and have a current unbeaten streak of 6-0-1. The squad hits the road for their final three conference matchups before the MWC tournament in San Diego, Calif. Nov. 4-7. The Lobos will play at Air Force this Friday, Oct. 22 at 4:30 p.m. and Wyoming on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
