LAS VEGAS --- Junior outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild became only the second New Mexico volleyball player named to the all-Mountain West Conference team. Fairchild was one of 16 players named to the all-conference team tonight in Las Vegas at the pre-tournament banquet. Outside hitter Lisa Meeter was named MWC Freshman of the Year for her performance this season.

"I am very happy and proud for Jeanne as she has played through injury all season and has still been able to be one of the Mountain West's most elite players," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "She has led the conference in kills most of the season and has really improved her overall game. Our team definitely rallies around her and seems more confident when she is on the court."

Fairchild, a graduate of St. Pius X in Albuquerque, is the first Lobo to receive all-MWC honors since 2002 when junior outside hitter Anna Reines was named to the all-MWC team. Fairchild finished the regular season ranked first in the MWC in kills per game (4.77) and second in points per game (5.19). She is currently ranked fourth on the UNM single season kills list with 467. All of this is even more remarkable due to the fact that Fairchild has been playing with a stress fracture in her left foot since Sept. 24.

"What a great honor for Lisa," said Nelson. "She has been one of our hardest workers and has put up huge numbers for a freshman. I think she is very deserving of this award as she has really helped raise the level of Lobo volleyball. She is in the top two in most of the stats categories on the team. I am glad she is a Lobo and very proud of her accomplishments this fall."

Meeter, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., earned MWC Freshman of the Year accolades after tallying the conference's highest freshman ranking in kills per game in conference matches (3.74) and points per game in league play (4.22). She also finished the regular-season ranked third in service aces per game for overall matches (0.35). Meeter has tallied double-figure kills in 20 of 28 matches played and averages 3.30 kills and 2.89 digs per game overall. She has recorded 12 double-doubles on the season, including two against nationally-ranked BYU and UNLV on the road. Meeter is the first Lobo to ever receive the MWC rookie honor.

UNM begins MWC Tournament action tomorrow, Nov. 22, at 12 p.m. (MST) in the quarterfinals against BYU. The match can be seen on The mtn.
