WACO, Texas - The Lobo volleyball team (2-5) concluded the Baylor Clarion Invitational on a high note, beating the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, 3-2. The win snapped New Mexico's four-game losing streak.
UNM led almost the entire first game, holding its biggest lead at 23-19. ULM charged back, tying the match at 24. Still even at 30, the Warhawks put down two straight kills to win the game, 32-30.
Louisiana-Monroe scored the first two points in game two, keeping the momentum on their side. The Warhawks extended their lead throughout the game, with the biggest coming at 25-16. The Lobos wouldn't go quietly, forcing four errors and dropping in two aces to pull within two. But UNM couldn't come back from such a large deficit, falling 30-28.
Facing another shutout, the Lobos came alive in game three, racing out to a 17-4 advantage. Senior Kelly Therkelsen led the team to a 30-11 win with four blocks and six kills, hitting .750 (6K-0E-8TA). The team hit .462 (14K-2E-26TA) while holding ULM to -.189 (6K-13E-37TA).
New Mexico's offensive display continued into the fourth game. The Lobos never trailed, grabbing a 30-21 win. Sophomore Jeanne Fairchild dominated at the net, hitting .600 on three kills and no errors in five attacks. She also added two aces and one block. Freshman Anna Lehne chipped in with a game-high four kills.
Fairchild and sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch helped UNM jump out in front in the fifth and final game, recording two kills and two aces, respectively, giving the team a 6-0 lead. The Warhawks couldn't retaliate, falling 15-12.
Therkelsen, who made her second consecutive all-tournament team, led the team with 15 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Fairchild finished the evening with seven aces, nine digs, three blocks and 14 kills, hitting a team-high .343 (14K-2E-35TA). Lehne added 11 kills and five blocks. Kwasigroch notched a double-double with 46 assists, 15 digs and three aces. Sophomore Gayle Tripp led the team with 21 digs.
The Lobos return to the court on Friday, Sept. 8, hosting the Comcast Lobo Invitational. They take on UTEP at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Center.
