2008 Lobo Volleyball Blog
Each week during the 2008 season a different Lobo will fill you in on what is going on in the life of the New Mexico Volleyball Team. Look for a new blog each Monday throughout the season.
October 27 - Jade Michaelsen, sophomore setter, Tucson, Ariz.
Having two weeks in a row in class and playing on our home court seemed like it would never happen, but it finally came last week against Air Force and this weekend against UNLV and SDSU. We were looking forward to the week against both teams but especially the match on Thursday vs. UNLV. The match symbolized much more then just another match at Johnson Center. It was our first annual Volley For The Cure match put on by Sarah Kwasigroch and Jordie Hadfield. This will be discussed more in depth later....
We started the week with weights and practice like usual. But we knew that it couldn't just be any week of practice. We needed to get better every day of practice because the two matches coming up were critical. We practiced hard and each visualized and dreamed about the upcoming matches. All we did was talk about the matches and invite people to come support (while asking them to donate for Volley For The Cure. :)
Thursday came and we all wore our `game day' shirts and pumped everyone up for the big match vs. UNLV. This was our Volley For The Cure match. Sarah had some teammate helpers decorate the gym and bought a TON of pink stuff to help make the gym and players look great. Our director of operations Jordie Hadfield had set up great silent auction baskets and put a lot of effort into the match.
If you didn't know, the match was dedicated to Sarah's mom Patricia Kwasigroch who was diagnosed last year with breast cancer and is now cancer free!! We were all so excited for the match and to make it even more festive we received pink warm up shirts and pink long socks to wear. To many of my teammates surprise I joined in on the festivities and painted my nails pink and enjoyed it. I am not a fan of the color pink but loved having the bonding time with the girls. Everyone had something pink on by the time the game started... Pink headbands, armbands, hair ties, bobby pins, toe nails, fingernails, socks, bows, pre-wrap (the stuff that goes underneath athletic tape), lip-gloss ... some even took the time to pick the right color undergarments. We also received water bottles and pink towels to use during the match.
The night ended great with a 3-0 win and a lot of money raised for a great cause. The total is not concrete yet but rumor has it that we raised around $3,500!! We celebrated the win for the night and then got down to business preparing for San Diego State.
Saturday came fast and so did the match. It was an early game at 1 o'clock and that means early everything. We had an early pre-game meal at Frontier and then an early pass and serve at 11. This led to the early match warm-up at 12 and the match started faster then we could blink. The match started and ended just as fast. It wasn't our prettiest win but we pulled through and did what we needed to do to win. We took SDSU in three sets and the early game ended with an early finish.
After the match there was a reception for the Point-Lobo Club - which everyone should join! (Contact Jordie Hadfield for more information.) It's a club that helps support the UNM volleyball team and you receive gifts back for being a part of it.
This week was a great one for the Lobos! We are now 17-4 for the season and 7-3 in the MWC, which puts us at a solid 3rd place. We are looking forward to a great week of practice and another week of moving closer to where we want to be ... the NCAA Tournament!
