ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico scores early, but falls to UNLV 3-1 Thursday evening at Lobo Field. The Lobos held tight defensively, allowing 10 hits and only giving up three runs. The Lobos continue their final homestand of the season against San Diego State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. MT. Saturday's game will be "Senior Day" for New Mexico as they honor five seniors after the game.
The Lobos scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to get the early 1-0 lead. With one out, senior Shaunte Duarte walked to get on base. Senior Cristin Anderson then singled to the left field to score the first run for New Mexico.
The Rebels scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. With two outs and a runner on first, Kendell Fearn hit a two-run home run to left field to get a 2-1 lead over the Lobos. UNLV scored one more run in the seventh to end the game ahead 3-1.
New Mexico was led by Anderson at the plate who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Duarte had a walk and scored the only run for the Lobos. Erin Brandow, Cassandra Kalapsa, and Stefani Carramusa each had a hit for New Mexico. Kaela DeBroeck (6-20) received the loss for the Lobos (11-35, 1-12 Mountain West Conference in the circle.
UNLV was led at the plate by Paige Emerson going 3-for-3 with a run. Ashli Holland went 3-for-4 with a run. Kylie Wagner (12-6) earned the win in the circle for the Rebels (31-20, 8-5 MWC) with five strikeouts.
