ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Freshman Whitney Johnson suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the Lobo women's basketball team's Monday night's game on the road in Denton, Texas.

The 6-2 post out of Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, went up for a shot and got fouled in the Lobos' second road contest of the season. Although the first-year had been coming off the bench for Sanchez, she had been showing rapid improvement and logging significant minutes in floor time.

Johnson scored six points and snagged four boards in 25 minutes of time in New Mexico's season opener at Texas Tech. She netted another six and brought down three rebounds against North Texas in the 17 minutes that she played prior to the injury.

"This is a tough blow for Whitney," head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. "She's been playing well and getting minutes. She just went up for a shot, got hit hard and had an awkward landing."

Johnson will take a medical redshirt for her true freshman season. Surgery is expected in the near future.
