EL PASO, Texas - Junior Ashley Perkins was phenominal again, tossing her fourth complete game shutout over her last for appearances to lead the New Mexico softball team past UTEP, 5-0 in game one of a doubleheader. It was the first meeting between the two team.
The Lobos came out swinging with freshman Amy Ray leading off the game with a double to left field. Ray moved to third on a passed ball and then scored off of sophomore Stephanie Kennedy's single. Junior Ashley Shartzer stepped up and gave New Mexico a 2-0 lead with her double to center that scored Kennedy from second.
Junior Cassie Chavez launched her third home run in the last two days. Chavez's home run to center in the second inning scored sophomore Jamar Bynum who had singled to lead off the inning. Sophomore Iraina Ogas came to the plate following Chavez, lifting a home run to center as well.
Ogas led the Lobo offense going 1-2 with one home run and two walks. Chavez was 1-3 with two RBIs. Leading the Miners, Gracie Borjas and Lindsey Pridgen each had one hit.
Improving to 6-0 with the win, Perkins pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits, one walk and striking out 10 of 24 batters faced. Taking the loss, UTEP's Renee DiPuccio tossed seven innings, giving up nine hits, five earned runs, four walks and striking out four.
New Mexico (12-7) plays the second game of the doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
