ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.---The University of New Mexico women's soccer team is set to open the 2011 season on Friday, as they host Saint Mary's at 7 p.m. The game, as well as the season, will be dedicated to George Montoya, the father of current Lobo Rachel Montoya.
The team is urging fans to join them at the UNM Soccer Complex as they honor the life of an avid Lobo fan and father. Proceeds from a raffle during the game on Friday will benefit the George D. Montoya Research Scholarship Fund created by the Montoya family and the UNM Department of Pathology. The permanent endowment fund will fund scholarships to UNM students to encourage a career in research.
Last season, New Mexico earned its first Mountain West regular-season championship by posting a 5-0-2 mark in Conference play. The Lobos finished the 2010 campaign with a 12-3-5 record and made their first-ever postseason appearance with an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
UNM returns Jennifer Williams, the MW Offensive Player of The Year, and keeper Kelli Cornell, the MW Defensive Player of The Year for the 2011 season. Williams, a speedster, scored eight goals and had 23 points last year. Cornell gave up 11 goals in 20 games for a 0.52 goals-against average.
The Lobos are 1-0-1 against the Gaels, as UNM defeated Saint Mary's 3-1 in their last meeting during the 2006 season.
