LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Sabrina Sandberg lifted the New Mexico softball team (15-8) past Columbia, 5-4 today in the Mutual of Omaha Lady Raider Classic today. Sandberg went 3-4 with 3 RBIs and a two run home run.
Columbia jumped on the board in the first inning scoring three runs. Stephanie Reeder scored the first run on Marconi's double. Kimberly Krisman scored from third on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Marisa Marconi then scored on an error by freshman catcher Robyn Hutson.
New Mexico climbed to within one, scoring two in the top of the second. Senior Jen Sena, pinch running for sophomore Iraina Ogas, scored on Hutson's ground out to shortstop Hilary Parsons. Senior Ora Hensley also scored thanks to sophomore Stephanie Kennedy's single.
The Lions increased their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second when Taylor Tierney hit a solo home run.
The Lobos managed to tie things up in the fourth when Sandberg hit her two run home run that scored Hensley as well. The game winning run came in the seventh as Sandberg doubled to left field to score sophomore Jamar Bynum who pinch ran for junior Ashley Shartzer. Shartzer led off the seventh with a double to left as well.
Earning the win for New Mexico was Ogas. She tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and just one earned run while striking out 12. Suffering the loss for Columbia was Megan Ivey, pitching four innings alowing nine hits and four earned runs. Jackie Adelfio threw three innings in relief, giving up four hits and one earned run.
The Lobos finish the day at 6 p.m. CST with their second game of the day against Texas Tech.
