ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - It was not a pretty game with both teams committing over 20 fouls and 20 turnovers but a roaring crowd of 8,467 guided the New Mexico women's basketball team to a 69-52 win over Oral Roberts in both teams' season opener as they squared off in the first round of the WNIT.
New Mexico opened the first half with a 12-0 run over the first five minutes. The Eagles' Sarah Davidson made two free throws and a three pointer to spark an 11-3 run for Oral Roberts, pulling them within two at 17-15. Junior Julie Briody rallied the Lobos, scoring six straight points to ignite an 11-5 run over the final seven minutes giving New Mexico a 29-20 lead at the half.
Two quick threes by Oral Roberts to open the second half pulled them within five but two technical free throws and a three-pointer by junior Katie Montgomery gave the Lobos back their 10-point lead. ORU again cut the lead to six with 14:38 remaining but a 17-8 run by the Lobos over the next nine minutes put away the Eagles for good.
Sophomore Dionne Marsh scored a team-high 20 points. Montgomery just missed a double-double, recording 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Abbie Letz dished out a team-high six assists to accompany her seven points and eight boards. Freshman Angela Hartill chipped in with eight points, making her New Mexico debut.
