The losing record is no more as the home wins just keep on coming for New Mexico. The Lobos topped the UC Riverside Highlanders 6-2 and 5-1 in the opening day of the Airport University Inn Lobo Classic at Lobo Field. The first win freed New Mexico from a losing record by setting it at 12-12 on the season and the second boost the team over the hump. The Lobos are now on an 11-game winning streak. This is the third longest streak in program history and the longest since a 15-game winning streak in the 1989-99 season. By putting yet another check in the win column, the Lobos remain undefeated at home for the 2006 season with an 8-0 record.

This was the first match-up for the Lobos in their hosted tournament. They will take the mound against South Dakota State Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. On Sunday, March 19, New Mexico will square off against Texas Tech at noon.

GAME 1

Final Stats

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- In the bottom of the first inning, Lindsey Elcess grounded out to third bringing Samantha Hughes home to take a 1-0 lead; the Lobos never looked back. New Mexico's Liz Young was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth that put her on base, advanced Ashley Allen to second and Analise Rubalcava to third. A hit by Jennifer Deitrich resulted in an error by the pitcher that allowed Analise Rubalcava to score.

In the fifth inning, the Lobos scored two more runs. After Rubalcava reached base on a fielder's choice, she was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. The pitcher then walked second baseman Kristina Schmallen and brought Ashley Allen to the plate. Allen singled to left field sending Rubalcava to home to score and Schmallen to third. Young got an RBI of her own by sending Schmallen to the plate off of a single to left field before the end of the inning.

The Higlanders didn't put runs on the board until the top of the sixth when they scored two. The Lobos would come back in the bottom of the inning to pull away further with two more runs of their own.

Senior hurler Katie Gregg captured the win improving her record to 5-3. She held UC Riverside to two runs on five hits over seven innings of work in the circle.

UC Riverside pitcher Christin Songer suffered her first loss of the season. She now rests at 5-1. She pitched just over five innings and gave up six runs on 23 at-bats.

Elcess, Rubalcava, Allen, Young and Deitrich had an RBI apiece while Highlander Melissa Sanchez had two.

GAME 2

Final Stats

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Once again, New Mexico first baseman Lindsey Elcess initiated the first score of the game to spark another victory. With runner Samantha Hughes on second, Elcess connected on a Sara Radabaugh pitch for a double and an RBI in the first inning.

After Highlander catcher Cassie Greenawalt struck out swinging for the first out of the second inning, Jessica Black sent screamer over the fence to tie the game up at one apiece. This was her fourth home run of the season.

Lobo outfielder Jennifer Deitrich took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch in the third inning that sent her to first. On the very next play, Ryanne Hodgins singled up the middle advancing Deitrich to second. Hughes singled on a bunt that sent Deitrich to third. After Chavez popped up to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, the pitcher hit yet another batter sending Elcess to first and Deitrich home. Analise Rubalcava flied out to right field allowing Hodgins to score before the end of the inning.

The Lobos put two more on the board with a fifth inning triple by Hodgins and a home run by Elcess.

Caley Peterson (4-2) got the win for New Mexico. She pitched all seven innings and surrendered five hits in 25 at-bats. Highlander Radabaugh received the loss with five hits in 24 at-bats.

Elcess had an amazing day at the plate with 4 RBI on two at-bats. She also hit her seventh home run of the season to lead the team. Rubalcava racked up one RBI in the Lobo victory.
