ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The Lobo Club recently announced its 2007-08 University of New Mexico Student-Athletes of the Year at the 2008 membership drive kickoff event. It is the second year in a row that the award has been presented by the department's primary support organization.

Football player George Carter and volleyball player Gayle Tripp were selected for the award by the Lobo Club Board of Directors Executive Committee from nominations by each Lobo team. Carter and Tripp were selected for representing UNM Athletics through volunteer and community service while maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and performing well in their sports.

"We are proud to recognize George and Gayle for their accomplishments in competition, in the classroom, and in the community," said Lobo Club vice president Bruce Beebe. "They are the true representation of what it means to be a Lobo student-athlete. It is an honor to be able to recognize our student-athletes for their exceptional work in the community."

Carter, a graduated senior from Albuquerque, N.M., received the honor for a second time, after being receiving the inaugural award in 2007. The Albuquerque High School graduate is active in the Albuquerque community, spending time visiting UNM Children's Hospital and serving as the keynote speaker at Job Core for a Black History Month program. He participated in "Red Ribbon Day" at Edward Gonzales Elementary, a program encouraging kids to stay in school and avoid drugs. Carter, a four-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference honoree, is also active in providing food and clothing to the homeless through New Hope Baptist Church and the Good Shepherd Church. On the field, Carter was a four-year letterwinner for the Lobos at linebacker, recording 77 tackles with nine tackles for loss in 40 career games. Carter graduated in May 2007 with a bachelor's in Marketing Management and worked on his master's in Business Administration during his senior season.

Tripp, a junior from Rio Rancho, N.M., is the second woman to receive the honor. A political science and communications and journalism major, Tripp is active in the community and on campus. She volunteers with several organizations, including the New Mexico Special Olympics and "Dig For A Cure" Cancer Awareness, and coaches a 12 & under club volleyball team. On campus, Tripp represents the volleyball team on the UNM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and assisted with the Mountain West Conference Blood Drive in February 2008. The Rio Rancho High School graduate has been a three-year starter at libero for the Lobos and ranks second on the all-time career digs list. She was a captain in 2007 and named to the Academic All-MWC team.
